“Investment in primary health and social care facilities is a key Government priority – it is clear that new buildings are required to provide people with modern integrated primary care services.”
Department of Health, 2008
The Government-commissioned Darzi Report, which looks at the future of an integrated NHS, has its roots deeply planted in transforming the provision of primary care. It champions investment to revolutionise the design of community healthcare facilities, and ensures that the private sector has an increasingly-significant role to play in delivering the next wave of primary care buildings.
So what does Lord Darzi’s Report actually mean for architects?
The Government has already confirmed at least £250m of funding to enable Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to set up over 100 new GP practices in the most under-doctored areas. There will also be further investment for 152 GP-led health centres with increased facilities, dubbed “polyclinics”, which are set to open 7 days a week in easily accessible locations such as shopping and leisure centres, and on the High Street.
Lord Darzi is adamant that these facilities are contemporary and innovative, to accurately reflect his commitment to providing a legacy of engaging community healthcare buildings. There has never been a more exciting time to get involved with the design of primary care facilities.
Now in its 4th successful year, The Architects’ Journal is delighted to bring you Community Healthcare Design. This senior-level conference will be the first such conference for the architectural world after the publication of this report and will provide architects with the necessary resources to thrive in this inspiring and evolving sector. Can you afford to miss out?
